Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about carpet installation, natural fiber care, our services, and more. Can't find what you're looking for? Feel free to contact us directly.
How long does carpet installation typically take?
Most residential carpet installations take 1-2 days, depending on the size of the area, furniture moving requirements, and complexity (stairs take longer). We provide a detailed timeline during your consultation so you can plan accordingly. Our team works efficiently while maintaining our exacting standards for quality.
What's the difference between sisal and seagrass carpet?
Sisal comes from the agave plant and has a slightly rougher, more textured feel—excellent for high-traffic areas like stairs and hallways. Seagrass is harvested from coastal meadows and has a naturally smooth, waxy surface that makes it more stain-resistant. Seagrass is ideal for dining rooms and casual living spaces. Both are eco-friendly natural fibers, but sisal is more durable while seagrass is easier to clean.
Is wool carpet good for Austin's climate?
Absolutely! Wool is an excellent choice for Austin's variable climate. It naturally insulates against both heat and cold, helps regulate humidity, and is naturally resistant to dust mites and allergens. In Texas heat, wool's breathability actually helps keep your home cooler than synthetic alternatives. Just ensure proper climate control in your home, and your wool carpet will perform beautifully for decades.
Do I need to move my furniture before carpet installation?
We offer full-service installation that includes professional furniture moving. Our team will carefully move your furniture, protect it during installation, and return it to position once complete. For delicate or valuable items, we recommend moving these yourself or notifying us in advance so we can take extra precautions.
How do I care for natural fiber carpets like sisal and seagrass?
Natural fibers require minimal maintenance: vacuum regularly without a beater bar, blot spills immediately (never rub), and avoid harsh chemicals. For deeper cleaning, we recommend professional cleaning every 12-18 months. Never steam clean sisal or seagrass—dry cleaning methods work best. We'll provide detailed care instructions specific to your fiber type at installation.
What's the typical lead time for a custom area rug?
Lead times vary by construction type: Custom bound carpet rugs take 2-4 weeks; natural fiber rugs with fabric borders take 2-6 weeks; hand-loomed custom rugs take 6-12 weeks; and traditional hand-knotted rugs take 8-16 weeks depending on complexity. We'll provide a specific timeline when you place your order and keep you updated throughout production.
Why does CDC Carpets operate by appointment only?
By appointment only, we ensure every client receives our undivided attention and personalized service. When you visit, our entire showroom and expert team are dedicated to your project. This model allows us to prepare samples specific to your needs, provide detailed consultations without interruption, and maintain the privacy and exclusivity our clients expect. Appointments typically last 45-60 minutes.
Can I see carpet samples in my own home before deciding?
Yes! We encourage viewing samples in your own lighting and alongside your furniture and décor. For significant projects, we'll bring a curated selection of samples to your home during our consultation. For smaller decisions, we offer sample loans you can take home overnight to see how colors look in different lighting conditions throughout the day.
What's included in your professional measurement service?
Our complimentary measurement service (with purchase) includes a detailed on-site assessment, precise room measurements, subfloor condition evaluation, pattern matching calculations for patterned carpets, seam placement planning, and a comprehensive material calculation including appropriate waste factors. You'll receive a written report with all dimensions and recommendations.
Are natural fiber carpets more expensive than synthetic?
Generally, yes—natural fibers like wool, sisal, and seagrass have a higher upfront cost than synthetic alternatives. However, they often provide better long-term value. Natural fibers typically last longer, look better as they age, and can increase your home's resale value. Additionally, their durability and timeless aesthetic mean you won't need to replace them as frequently as synthetic carpets.
Do you offer carpet for stairs?
Yes! We specialize in stair carpet installations, including waterfall and Hollywood-style installations. Wool and sisal are particularly popular for stairs due to their durability. We carefully plan seam placement to minimize visibility and ensure safety with proper padding and secure installation. Curved or spiral staircases may require custom solutions we can discuss during consultation.
What areas do you serve?
Our showroom is in West Lake Hills, and we serve the greater Austin area including West Lake Hills, Bee Cave, Lakeway, Dripping Springs, Rollingwood, and surrounding communities. We typically work within approximately 30 miles of our showroom but often accommodate special requests beyond this radius. Contact us to confirm service availability for your specific location.
How do I prepare for my appointment at CDC Carpets?
To make the most of your appointment: bring photos of your space, note approximate room dimensions if possible, gather inspiration images showing styles you like, bring fabric swatches or paint colors you're coordinating with, and prepare questions about materials, installation, or care. If possible, visit during the time of day your space receives typical lighting so you can see how samples look in similar conditions.
What's the best carpet for homes with pets?
For pet-friendly homes, we recommend: (1) Wool—naturally stain-resistant and durable, (2) Solution-dyed fibers (if choosing synthetic) for bleach-cleanability, or (3) Patterned carpets and darker colors to hide pet hair between vacuuming. Avoid very light solid colors and extremely thick piles where claws can get caught. We also offer pet-specific treatments and can advise on best practices for homes with furry family members.
Can you install carpet over existing flooring?
It depends on the existing flooring. Carpet can typically be installed over hardwood, tile, or vinyl if the subfloor is in good condition and transitions can be managed. We cannot install over existing carpet. During our consultation, we'll assess your current flooring and subfloor condition to determine the best approach for your specific situation.
