Styles of wool carpet: Cut PileCut pile is a smooth, classic finish often known as "velour" or "velvet" pile, ideal for bringing a luxurious and sensual feel to rooms. The tops of the loops of wool are cut and the yarn slightly twisted to produce tufts of yarn that stand upright and produce a smooth, even surface.
Hard Twist This cut pile carpet, also called “frieze”, is where the yarn is twisted to a high degree and then set. The hard wearing texture minimizes tracking (footprints), shading (irregular light and dark areas in the pile) and fluffing, making it a very popular, practical carpet.
Loop Pile Level loop pile is a hardwearing surface formed by loops of yarn of uniform length. Multi-level loop pile uses different lengths of yarn and therefore has a more sculpted appearance. Both are hardwearing and do not show footprints – ideas for areas that get a lot of use.
Cut and Loop Variations These carpets have a patterned or textured appearance achieved by having some tufts of yarn cut and some uncut, or loop. The uncut loops can be left at the same level but are usually lower than the cut.
